I also have a master's degree from the School of Human Ecology (at UW Madison). Mine is technically a Master's of Consumer Science, a subset of psychology and economics. Fascinating stuff!
Someone once belittled me at a party when I handed over a business card that listed the three types of freelance work I did (all related). This post made me finally realize how silly that guy was. I only just gathered the courage to answer the question "what do you do?" with writer in the last two years--even though it was most of what I was doing from age 22 on.
I admire a focused generalist mindset and think of myself as a kind of fluid amateur. I prefer amorphous titles like artist and designer because they don’t really have fixed meaning. Within those words is a vast landscape of thinking and doing.
I just created a new business card for myself based off John’s approach. I haven’t gotten it printed yet (as I only used this as a thought experiment), but maybe when I’m brave enough I will!
Mine says:
Card Designer • Illustrator • Decision Coach • Consultant • Gift Guide • Registry Architect • Excel Builder • Idea Person • Nursery Designer • Muralist • Floor Plan Problem Solver • Van Designer • Clutter Cutter • Children’s Book Author • Editor • Short Story Writer • Thifter • Vintage Sourcer • Vacation Planner
AI will never take this guys job.
